What are the policies regarding avatars and cover images?

Your avatar is just another place on DeviantArt to display a digital version of yourself -- one that will be attached to your submissions, comments, and more!

Avatars, as well as any cover images -- including profile, journal, subscription tier, commission, and gallery cover images -- are public and cannot be hidden by any browsing settings from those who might not want to see certain imagery.

Policies around what's permitted to appear in these public displays are outlined in the Terms of Service or Etiquette policy, same as any other disallowed work. Equally as important: anything that would require a Mature tag is not permitted to be used as an avatar or cover image.

Profanity and strong language is not generally regulated anywhere else within the DeviantArt community and does not need to be reported.

If you are using copyrighted work (in whole or in part) created by another person, you should obtain their permission, otherwise the avatar will be removed should we receive a take-down from the copyright owner.

Someone else's avatar or cover image

  • Avatars and cover images which contain nudity or otherwise violate policy should be reported to the Help Desk.
  • If your artwork is being used as an avatar or cover image without permission, please file a take-down notice.
