What does "Created using AI tools" mean?

If you’re browsing DeviantArt and encounter the “Created using AI tools” label on a deviation page, it means the artist has acknowledged that some or all of the deviation was created with the assistance of AI tools.

DeviantArt defines art created using AI tools as artwork that is either made entirely with AI tools or consists primarily of AI-generated components. If the main focus of the image is self-created and it only includes a small, insignificant AI-generated component, it does not need to be labeled as created using AI tools.

When should my deviation be labeled “Created using AI tools?”

If you’re submitting artwork and aren’t sure whether or not your work should have the Created using AI tools label, consider the following examples.

Example artwork that does need the “Created using AI tools” label:

  • An AI-generated portrait photo that has been touched up
  • A short story drafted using ChatGPT and edited afterward

Example artwork that does not need the “Created using AI tools” label:

  • An illustration you created based on a ChatGPT prompt description, or using a color palette generated by an AI tool
  • A digital painting of a person with a small, insignificant AI-generated element in the background

Whether you feel your submission needs to be labeled or not, it is always recommended to disclose any use of AI tools in your deviation description.

How do I add the “Created using AI tools” label to my artwork?

When submitting artwork, you will see a required setting on the submit page to indicate whether or not your work was created using AI tools. This setting will be remembered when you submit.

For existing deviations, you can apply the “Created using AI tools” label to multiple deviations at once by following these steps:

  • Visit your Gallery
  • Click “Edit” at the top left of your Gallery page
  • Select any deviations to which you want to apply the label
  • Click on the “Label options” menu and select “Add ‘Created using AI tools’ label”

You can also bulk apply this label to your deviations in the Studio by selecting the deviations you want to edit, clicking the “Label options” menu, and selecting “Add Created using AI label.”

NOTE: This label will be automatically applied if an image’s metadata indicates that it was created with AI. This metadata is embedded in images generated by most major AI tools.

What if I’m selling art created using AI tools?

DeviantArt requires all art for sale to be correctly marked as Created using AI tools, as defined in DeviantArt’s Terms of Service. Deviants found selling artwork that is partially or fully AI-generated without applying the “Created using AI tools” label may have their sales refunded or face disciplinary action.
