Changes to Fragments and New Badge System

Update, September 1, 2024: The gem system for granting badges to deviations and comments has been released.
An updated system for awarding badges to deviations and comments is coming soon, with the intent of providing a more inclusive experience for all deviants.

What's New: Gems

Starting on September 1, 2024, all deviants will receive gems that can be used to award badges. Every Sunday, deviants will receive a weekly allotment of gems, the amount of which varies based on Core Membership status:

  • Non-Core deviants will receive 40 gems per week.
  • Core Members will receive 50 gems per week.
  • Core+ Members will receive 350 gems per week.
  • Core Pro Members will receive 550 gems per week.
  • Core Pro+ Members will receive 650 gems per week.

Any gems remaining from the previous week will expire when new gems are granted.

Much like the existing system, badges can be awarded to deviations and comments using gems, with Quartz badges costing 10 gems, Hype badges costing 100 gems, and Diamond badges costing 300 gems.

With weekly gem grants, more deviants will be able to award more badges each week, with seasonal and limited-time badges giving deviants more opportunities to show appreciation for deviations and comments they love.

What's Changing: Fragments

As part of this change, the fragment system will be sunsetted. Any remaining fragments deviants have after August 31, 2024 will be converted into one of four limited-edition profile badges, which will be awarded to deviants by September 30, 2024. The badge deviants receive will be based on their remaining fragment balance:

  • Deviants with up to 100 fragments will have their fragments converted into a Bronze Fragment badge
  • Deviants with between 101 and 1,000 fragments will have their fragments converted into a Silver Fragment badge
  • Deviants with between 1,001 and 5,000 fragments will have their fragments converted into a Gold Fragment badge
  • Deviants with over 5,000 fragments will have their fragments converted into a Platinum Fragment badge

Only deviants who have a fragment balance after August 31, 2024 will receive these badges, and they will only be granted once.

What should I do with my fragments before September 1?

There are a few ways you can use up your fragments!

  • Until August 31, you can continue to award badges to deviations and comments using the fragments you already have.
  • Alternatively, you can hold on to your fragments if you want one of the previously-mentioned fragment badges for your profile.

A limited-time badge will be available during the month of August in celebration of DeviantArt’s 24th birthday, so you can award that badge to deviations and comments to show your appreciation as well.
