While chat notifications are a quick way to see if you've got a new message, you may want a more focused browse experience on DeviantArt. 

Hovering over the chat icon will show you the "Options" settings wheel. Click this to expand.

You can choose to "Mute sound alerts" only, or "Mute all chats" which will disable chats from automatically popping up, notifications, and sound alerts.
